OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (June 12, 2024) – The City of Oak Ridge Fire Department officially opened its Safe Haven Baby Box today. It’s a device for mothers to safely and anonymously drop off their newborn babies in a time of crisis.
The Oak Ridge baby box is a temperature-controlled bin installed on the outside wall of Oak Ridge’s Central Fire Station at 333 Tuskegee Drive. It’s available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to any mother who needs help in a time of crisis. The box is in honor of Baby Wyatt, a newborn whose body was found wrapped in an oversized T-shirt along the banks of Melton Hill Lake on March 26, 2020. His identity remains unknown.
The Tennessee Safe Haven Law (TCA 68-11- 255), enacted on July 1, 2001, allows mothers of newborns to surrender unharmed babies within two (2) weeks of birth, anonymously and without fear of prosecution.
The instructions to use the box are simple and printed above the box. The mother simply places the baby in the bassinet inside and closes the door.
How does it work?
1. When the mother opens the door to the box, paperwork will fall out with information about the Tennessee Safe Haven Law and resources available at the Free Medical Clinic.
2. The infant is placed in the medical bassinet inside the box, which triggers a sensor that will contact 911 that a baby has been placed in the baby box.
3. The door automatically locks upon placement of a newborn.
4. First Responders will be notified by 911 and will begin immediate care.
Prior to putting the box into service, staff were trained in the operation of the box and what the proper procedures are. Once a baby is retrieved by first responders, patient assessment begins, and the newborn will be taken to a hospital for a medical examination.
“This will give our community a safe place for mothers to leave their infant in a time of crisis,” Oak Ridge Fire Chief Travis Solomon said.
Secret Safe Place for Newborns of Tennessee says more than 132 babies have been surrendered to facilities in Tennessee since the law was enacted.
This is the eighth box in Tennessee. Nationwide, 49 infants have been placed in baby boxes since 2017, according to Safe Haven Baby Boxes.
The baby box was funded by a donation from First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge.
“About a year ago, I went to now retired Deputy City Manager Jack Suggs with the idea to bring a baby box to Oak Ridge and he was immediately supportive in getting this project started,” said Chief Solomon. “We worked with our community partners, Oak Ridge Public Works, Oak Ridge Electric and Oak Ridge Police departments to get the box here and operational and we appreciate everyone’s help and support.”
